The IEEE is a Trans-national Organization, which encompasses professionals, teachers and students with an interest in engineering and provides them with a forum for interaction through its innumerable symposia, conventions, publications and competitions. The Student Branch at TSEC (IEEE-TSEC) is particularly renowned for its efforts to make available, the latest technologies to its members.

The IEEE Student Branch of Thadomal Shahani Engineering college was established in 1990 with the help of our honorable Principal Prof. Kranti Kumar, & since then has raced on to become one of the largest IEEE Student Branch competing with thousand other Universities & Colleges in six continents. Thus along with the distinction of being the largest professional society in TSEC with more than 400 members, IEEE-TSEC is also one of the largest student branch in the world.

IEEE-TSEC has four technical societies: -

  • Communications Society
  • Computer Society
  • Engineering in Medical and Biology Society
  • Industrial Electronics Society

IEEE-TSEC organizes a galaxy of events throughout the year. Some popular events are: -

  • ISAAC : IEEE Students' Activities and Conferences is our Annual Tech Festival held in October every year & is popular among the student masses across every engineering college in Mumbai & Navi Mumbai
  • Industrial Trip : Its an Annual 10 day trip to industrially developed cities such as Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore. This facilitates the students' interaction with the industry in different parts of the country & they thus get a valuable experience of the ground realities of the environment in which they shall be soon working in. Thus the IEEE-TSEC aims at bridging the gap between college and the industry.

Besides these the individual societies organize a host of other activities like tech-events like Mosaic & techno, seminars, workshops, software courses & the list can go on & on. Also worth mentioning besides the technological advantage it gives to its students, while doing so it also gives the students an invaluable experience of managing IEEE-TSEC as an organization which shall definitely lay the stepping stone for our future corporate managers & CEOs.

Well this could go on for well over a million pages. You could get a whole lot of information at www.ieee-tsec.org and www.ieee.org. Remember we are not the best because we are the largest...We are the largest because we are the best.

Introduction

The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers is a renowned national body of Chemical engineering professionals. Its activities include, among others, arranging seminars and symposia relayed to the Chemical engineering discipline. Essentially, it serves as a platform for conducting activities and events beneficial to the fraternity of Chemical engineers. The TSEC student chapter is a relatively new one. With all the formalities done, IIChE -TSEC was formed in 1995. Ever since its inception it has been growing, starting with as little as 8 members. The TSEC student chapter headed by head of department, aims to bring information and technology to the undergraduate students which will help them keep abreast with the latest in the Chemical Engineering field.

Membership

The student chapter of TSEC makes every Chemical Engineer student a member of the organization. With a petty membership fee, one can very easily avail of all the periodicals and magazines that are printed every quarterly or semester wise by the IIChE office (head quarters) in Calcutta. The TSEC-student chapter is headed by the General Secretary, a student from the final year He is entrusted with the work of running the Organization smoothly. A host of other posts like the Finance Secretary, Program Organizer, Convener, Joint Secretary and the like exist. However in terms of work these post remain titular. In that every members input is crucial.

Events

Chemfusion is one of the main activities carried out by the IIChE. It is an intercollegiate festival that brings together Chemical engineering students from various institutions affiliated to the Mumbai University, which primarily include TSEC, UDCT, DJSCoE, MGM, BHVP, PEC, SSJCE etc.

A variety of programmes are conducted-both technical & non-technical (paper presentations, debates, quizzes, etc.). These events hope to foster the spirit of healthy competition and to promote an interaction amongst the budding Chemical engineers from the Mumbai region.

In addition to our main event we have a few seminars related to Chemical Engineering topics and /or allied subjects. For instance last year we had a Biotechnology based seminar. Such activities not only help students with their organizing skills but also make them take efforts to go beyond their curriculum.

Moreover we also encourage students to participate in quizzes and debates organized once in the odd semester. Students selected from such events are allowed to participate in intercollegiate events including Chemfusion.

Our efforts are focused in making IIChE a prominent organization. We are sure we will achieve it in the near future.

Management Societies-TSEC

The Management Society is one of the few non-technical societies in TSEC. Every TSECite is by default a member of the Management Society, making it in true sense, a society of, for and by the TSECites. The MS also has the good fortune of having our foresighted Principal Prof. Kranti Kumar as its counselor. While the MS may have started off as catering mainly to the management school of thought, a lot of value has been done over the years.

The activities of the MS encompass everything from organizing mock exams (GRE, TOEFL, CAT) to personality development seminars and fun events like the ever-popular Treasure Hunt. And that's not all, the MS also brings out Synapse, the TSEC college magazine.

Having said that every TSECite is by default a member of the MS, we have a group of enthusiastic people comprising the Orbit, who are chosen after applicants are interviewed by the MS Committee. The Orbit works in close co-ordination with the Committee for the various events organized by the MS. Being a part of the Orbit Provides an excellent opportunity to hone one's organization and communication skills.

Whilst there are no broad divisions lines, the Orbit comprises of three groups - organization, publicity and the editorial board. Whilst those who opt for organization work backstage, the publicists are entrusted with the task of creating awareness about the events organized by the MS. The editorial board comprises of creatively inclined individuals with a flair for writing, which works on the college magazine.

The Management Society thus provide an opportunity for the organizationally talented students to polish their skills and work for the cause they can identify with, equipping them with experience needed to succeed in industry.

ALAAP marked its second year in TSEC with a series of events.

To begin with, the committee decided to organize 'Taraana- The Classical Concert' exclusively for the classical music lovers.

In the second semester of the year, ALAAP made its presence felt in a big way by launching 'TSEC IDOL', TSEC's first ever singing competition. This was ALAAP's first attempt to reach out to the students on such a grand scale. ALAAP received record registrations for 'TSEC Idol'. with students from all disciplines participating in it. The eliminations were held on the 10th and 11th of February, 2006, with over 50 students turning up on both the days to compete for the trophy. Of all the participants, 20 were selected as the semi-finalists. The semi-finals, on 13th Feb, saw some enthralling performances, with 7 best singers in TSEC making it to the grand finals, held on 17th Feb. The competition in the finals was extremely tough and required the singers to take their singing to another level. Such was the fierceness of the competition, that the judges had difficulty in selecting a single winner and had to choose not one, but two winners. The competition was judged by the expert faculty who took lots of efforts in selecting the first TSEC Idols.

ALAAP is thus one of the few non-technical societies that aims at providing a performing platform to young budding artists to nourish their talents. It also aims at generating interest in music in students and encourage them to participate in non-technical cultural activities along with technical ones, for an overall personality developments.
