Department of Biotechnology presents BIOZEAL'08

Thadomal Shahani Engineering College has always believed in the all round development of its students. Encouraging sports activities plays an important role in doing the same. A plethora of inter-departmental or intra-college events are organized round the year which allow students to showcase their talents in various sports and games and hence be chosen to represent the college at the inter-institutional level. For team events like football, cricket, basketball and rink football, the different departments in the college combine to form three teams with a separate team exclusively for first year students. This enables proper judgement of the incoming talent each year and is a system unique to TSEC. It also allows first year students to be recognized and picked for inter-college events, which is rare in other colleges. In addition to team games, sports like Table Tennis, Badminton, Carrom and Chess are also held with the best players in these competitions forming the college teams. An annual sports meet with all track and field events ensures the recognition of our college?s budding athletes. At the end of the year, the achievers are rewarded with certificates and medals and awards for the best player in each sport and grand prizes of the "Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year" and "Best Male and Female Athlete" are also given at the annual prize distribution.

At the inter-college level, we organize an inter-engineering college football tournament in March every year. This is arguably the best of all inter-engineering college tournaments with 20 teams participating in its unique league-cum-knockout format. This ensures all teams play atleast 4 matches before the knockout stage and thus draws an overwhelming response. A rolling trophy for the winning team, certificates for the three placed teams and an award for the most valuable player of the tournament are handed out. With a quality playing surface provided by the Karnatak Sporting Association, Churchgate and the hiring of professional referees, this is one tournament all young footballers in the Mumbai engineering fraternity look forward to.

The organization of intra-college Sports coupled with a very family like atmosphere among the students and staff of TSEC has allowed our college to excel at inter college events. TSEC boasts of a formidable football team that has won 3rd and 2nd place at All-India level at the BITS Open Sports Meet in Pilani for the last two years. It has also won laurels in inter-engineering college tournaments in Mumbai over the last three years. Despite not having a Lawn Tennis tournament internal to the college, our college Lawn Tennis team have been unbeaten in Mumbai for the last three years, claiming all four inter-engineering college tournaments in that time. In Table Tennis as well, both the boys and girls teams have been a force to reckon with, always standing in the top 3 teams in any tournament, even fielding non-engineering teams. A 3rd place finish all All-India level for both the boys and girls teams came in September 2003 at the BITS Open Sports Meet, Pilani and was a highlight for them as they faced plenty of stiff competition. We have also achieved major laurels in Swimming at All-India level and boast of national swimmers who have represented and won medals for the country.

It is evident that TSEC has achieved lots of recognition due to its sports activities and the achievements of its sportsmen. This is made possible by the unending support of the teachers and staff and the funds provided that make participation, practice and organization possible. The TSEC spirit on and off the field is one that other colleges crave for and hence it is indeed possible and probable that we are moving only in one direction in the sporting field?. Forward.
